Subject: Scientific Framework for Rehabilitation of Coral Reefs
Coral Reef Restoration
Scientific Frameworks for Rehabilitation
October 18-19, 2005
University of Miami James L. Knight International Center * Miami,
Florida
Presenting a Conceptual Framework and Strategies for Coral Reef
Restoration
Participants will benefit from an integrated, multidisciplinary approach
that encompasses engineering, geological, biological and socioeconomic
factors. The conference provides a unique opportunity to exchange
information and learn the challenges of coral reef rehabilitation
projects from practical case studies.
* Explore critical issues in managing reef ecosystems
* Assess aesthetic components of ecological restoration
* Analyze the role of technology transfer on the rehabilitation
process
* Examine applied experimental ecology
* Gain new ideas from practical restoration case studies
* Determine how much compensatory restoration is necessary
* Analyze the benefits of a cooperative Natural Resources Damage
Assessment
* Examine ethical dilemmas in coral reef restoration
Who Should Attend?
* Representatives from academia in marine science, marine ecology,
ecological sciences, marine resource management and marine biotechnology
* Specialists with expertise in the study of coral reef
restoration
* Representatives from state and federal agencies that provide
funding for research and restoration projects
* Resource Managers involved in monitoring and assessing coral
reefs
* Scientists and Engineers who are actively involved with
ecosystem restoration
* Ecological Scientists and Researchers
* Coastal Management Specialists
* Reef Scientists
* Coral Reef Specialists
The conference agenda was organized by William F. Precht. He is a
carbonate sedimentologist by training, and has been studying coral reefs
for 27 years. William F. Precht has worked as an environmental scientist
specializing in the restoration and rehabilitation of various coastal
resources. He is presently completing a book entitled Coral Reef
Restoration Handbook: The Rehabilitation and Preservation of an
Ecosystem Under Siege to be published by CRC Press.
