Title: Fisheries Analyst
2 one-year positions, with strong chance of permanent employment for
outstanding performers (to be filled ASAP)
Position Description:
Supervisor: President (Redmond, WA) and Vice President (DC)
Locations: one in MCBI's Redmond, Washington headquarters, one in
Washington DC office
Responsibilities and Duties: The primary role is conducting research on
fisheries in the USA and elsewhere in support of MCBI's policy initiatives.
Specific duties include:
1) researching fisheries literature and talking with knowledgeable people
about various sectors of the industry, kinds of commercial fishing gears,
their patterns of use, bycatch, limitations and gear loss;
2) writing correspondence and helping to prepare written and visual
materials for publications on fisheries and related topics;
3) securing still and video images of topics of interest in marine
conservation;
4) helping to identify emerging marine conservation issues, particularly
those affecting fisheries, by assisting with organizing, facilitating and
recording proceedings of scientific workshops and symposia on these issues,
and generating products directed towards policymakers, the public and the
scientific community;
5) helping to communicate and advocate MCBI positions to Congress, federal
agencies, other non-governmental organizations, funders, the scientific
community and the general public, in both written and oral form; and
6) assisting with other MCBI activities such as fundraising, press events
and administrative tasks, as the President or Vice President deems appropriate.
Qualifications: We seek responsible, diligent, flexible, computer-savvy
individuals who want to make important contributions to marine
conservation. Minimum requirements include Bachelor's degree with
substantial coursework in fisheries and/or marine policy, excellent library
and Internet researching skills, good writing skills, excellent
interpersonal skills, desire to work as a member of a team of well-trained,
dedicated marine conservationists and ability to meet deadlines. We prefer
candidates with a Masters degree or professional experience in fisheries or
a closely related field, at-sea experience on commercial fishing boats and
experience with still and video technologies.
Salary and benefits: $35,000/yr, group medical and dental insurance, health
club stipend, 403(b) retirement plan with generous employer match after one
year, 2 weeks of paid leave.
