Graduate Research Assistantship Opening

Daniel Hayes
Department of Fisheries and Wildlife
Michigan State University

Project Description:
I have funding for an M.S. or Ph.D. student to work on a research project
focusing on removal of Stronach Dam on the Pine River, Manistee County,
Michigan. The primary objectives of the study are to determine the
response of fish populations (particularly brook, brown, rainbow trout,
white and redhorse suckers) and their habitat to the removal of Stronach
Dam. We have data covering the pre-removal period, and anticipate that
funding will be available through the entire removal process (2-3 years
remaining), and after removal.

Sample fish habitat and populations in the Pine River following established
protocols. Supervise two interns in course of field work. Analysis of
data collected, and provide written reports. I will also encourage the
student to develop a component of the research project to pursue their own
interest area.

Applicants must be highly motivated, and interested in extensive field work
under demanding conditions (e.g., research site has limited access,
requiring equipment to be packed up to 1/2 mile at times. Camping for up to
1 week at a time will also be necessary). Good academic credentials
required, preference given to students interested in mixing field-oriented
studies with a training in quantitative aspects of fish ecology and
fisheries science. Preference also given to students with experience in
stream habitat evaluation, boat electroshocking, and other forms of
fisheries-related field work.

Stipend will be approximately $1100 per month for full calendar year, with
6-credit tuition waiver and health benefits provided.

Closing date:
Please contact me by February 1 for an initial contact, and submit
application materials by February 15. I hope to select a student by April 1
if not sooner. The preferred starting date for this position is May 15,
but accommodations can be made for students who need to start as late as
June 15.
