JOB CONDITIONS

* Responsible for living conditions at the Station including
        preparation of meals
        ordering food and supplies form Miami
        inventory control for food, supplies and scientific equipment
        leadership role with volunteers

* Live on premises all year around.
* Two week annual paid vacation; liberal policy for short trips off the
  island, taken as needed.
* Salary commensurate with experience and qualification
* Must be familiar with boat handling and the marine environment
* College degree preferred
* Must have ability to:
        oversee preparation of meals for 15-20 people
        handle boats and skiffs
        learn and organize shark collection forays
        help Student investigators direct the science projects
        maintain household inventory
        maintain scientific inventory
        advise and direct volunteer staff
        care for pets (three potcake dogs) at the station
        share room with 1-3 people
        to speak fluent English (colloquialisms included)
        work closely with Dr. Gruber and doctoral students
        support the approximately 6 short classes held annually
        help with the approximately 5-7 television productions annually
        go to sea twice each year, in charge of the research scheduling

Please be aware that Bimini is a small fishing island and does not have
readily available goods and supplies.  There are no stores on S Bimini
and only abut 20 vehicles on the dirt roads.  We have no telephone but
there is constant radio connection with Dr. Gruber's home office in
Miami.  Most everything is brought in from Miami by boat or airplane.
The Bahamas foreign country, with a great difference in culture and
language.  As guests the manager is responsible for political
connections with the local population and government.

The ideal person is someone who is prepared and organized has
leadership abilities and can act as "den mother," kind, compassionate,
willing listener, "scout leader" and stern, orderly,.  The manager
should be an "executive chief," who knows how to cook and plan menus
but is able to relegate duties to staff members.  The manager will work
closely with the graduate students in planning and executing the
research.

SITE: The Bimini Biological Field Station is a small, self contained,
independent research station affiliated with but not owned by the
University of Miami.  Its mission is evenly divided between education
and research.  Courses are offered at both secondary and university
level.  Most of the research involves the abundant and accessible
elasmobranch fish fauna, especially the lemon shark.

ACCESS: BBFS is located at Bimini, Bahamas, 42 nautical miles east of
Miami, Florida and is served by ship and aircraft including some
regularly scheduled flights each day. Contact Bimini Island Air at

ENVIRONMENT: The major tropical ecosystems can be easily reached from
the Station within minutes.  These include sandy, muddy and rocky
shores, seagrass and mangrove forests and coral reefs.  The Gulf stream
flushed Bimini waters are considered pristine.  The Station is located
on the south island, practically in isolation.

FACILITIES: The laboratory's physical plant sleeps 20 and is composed
of 5 "state rooms"(2 double bunks), a dry lecture room/ lab, a dining
room, a fully equipped kitchen, two bathrooms and storage areas.  The
Station produces all drinking water by desalination and rainwater
cisterns in conjunction with brackish water which is pumped up from 2
wells provide adequate wash water.  A tool room is well stocked with
necessary hardware to maintain and repair all mechanisms at the
station.  We have two electric generators in case of power failure and
the building is centrally air conditioned and heated..  Our small fleet
consists of one 22 ft. CCP Aquasport skiff, two 16 ft. center console
skiffs and 3 small 16' Carolina skiffs for working in very shallow
water, all powered by outboard motors.  Our in house pets, "Indy",
"Mama" and "Nari", are Bimini dogs that qualify as our "marine
mammals".

RESEARCH: Our primary research involves elucidation of the role of the
lemon shark in a tropical marine ecosystem.  This work uses the
disciplines of systems ecology, bioenergetics, life history studies,
ethology and sensory biology.  Other specific field studies by the
investigators dealing with the abundant elasmobranch fauna will be
cheerfully considered. Masters or Ph.D. degrees: Principal
investigators must have outside funding and/or a mentor from another
institution. Necessary equipment for the research will be provided by
BBFS.

EDUCATION: Tropical Marine Biology (MBF 514) is a 10 day, three credit,
500 level course, open to upper level undergraduates and graduate
students. The course consists of formal lectures, daily field trips and
laboratory sessions.  Students will be required to identify 100
organisms and know something about their life history. The final exam
and laboratory practicum are completed on the last evening of the
course. Elasmobranch Biology (MBF 524) is a 6 day, 2 credit course
focusing on the life of sharks. Specific courses can be tailored to the
need of other colleges and even high schools.  The courses are
ordinarily held during inter-session and vacation periods.  The months
of July and August are primarily reserved for research.

VOLUNTEERS: Anyone over the age of 18 interested in biology, wanting
field experience or internships are welcomed to apply.  They will
assist in the on going research.  Applications will be sent out as
requested. If chosen, volunteers must pay $420.00 a month room and
board, $100.00 deposit and any expenses they incur in Bimini.  A
passport or birth certificate with a photo ID. is required for US
Citizens to enter the country.  US. currency can be used.
