Dauphin Island Sea Lab
Research Experiences for Undergraduates
Marine Science Fellowships

August 28 - November 17, 2000

Alabama's Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) will offer seven
undergraduate fellowships in marine science during the Fall
Semester, 2000 as part of the National Science Foundation's
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program. This
program is for undergraduate students interested in pursuing
careers or graduate studies in Marine Sciences. Students
selected for the program will participate in an intensive
12-week research experience in which they work within a
faculty research group and develop and complete their own
independent research project. In addition, participants will
participate in a series of workshops on professional skills,
and attend lectures by outstanding visiting speakers. The
Sea Lab will award academic credit for this experience with
prior approval from the student's home campus.

Students in this exciting marine science program will have
the opportunity to gain basic field and laboratory research
skills, and develop proficiency in data interpretation and
presentation. Research areas of DISL faculty include:
ecology of early life history of marine and estuarine
fishes; plant-animal interactions in seagrass beds;
microbial ecology; nutrient biogeochemistry; benthic
ecology; trophic interactions and carbon budgets in marine
ecosystems; life history and biomechanics of marine
invertebrates; paleo-ecology, estuarine science, plankton
ecology; and others. See Faculty Research Descriptions for
additional information.

This program seeks not only to provide participants with
specific knowledge of marine science, but also to develop
the student's background and confidence to make career and
educational choices in the future.

campus includes classrooms, research laboratories, dormitory
and dining facilities, library, research vessels and a
public aquarium. Fall weather on the Alabama coast is mild
and excellent for recreation and field research. Other
ongoing activities during the fall include graduate research
and classes for 35+ students, research programs of the 10
resident faculty, and day-trip programs for hundreds of
kindergarten through high school classes.

Eligibility . . .

Applications are invited from undergraduates in their junior
and senior years with interests in biology, chemistry,
geology and environmental sciences. Students cannot have
already graduated at the time of the fellowship.
Participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of
the U.S. and its possessions.

Stipend . . .

Stipends of $3,000 will be provided for the 12-week
