Ph.D. Assistantship - Growth, movement and survival of individual Atlantic salmon in Catamaran Brook, New Brunswick.
An assistantship through the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Department of Natural Resources Conservation or Organismic and Evolutionary Biology Program or The University of New Brunswick, Department of Biology for 2000 is available to a highly motivated student with an interest in field studies involving individual stream salmonids in small coldwater streams. The assistantship forms part of a collaboration between the laboratories of Dr. Ben Letcher (Conte Anadromous Fish Research Center/UMass) and Dr. Rick Cunjak (University of New Brunswick). Depending on the interests of the student, the assistantship could be held at either university. Enrollment will be for Fall 2000, but field work could begin as early as May, 2000.
The research project involves tagging and resampling individual Atlantic salmon in Catamaran Brook, New Brunswick to determine individual growth rates, movement rates and survival. The research is part of a series of similar studies (West Brook, Massachusetts; Pleasant River, Maine) that is designed to examine growth/survival/movement of individuals within the context of a range of latitudinal (South to North) and manipulation (all stocked fish to all wild) gradients. The remote location of the study site requires a student with the ability to work independently and in occasionally harsh environments. We expect that the student will spend extended periods at the field site.
Qualifications include an M.S. in biology, ecology, fisheries biology or a related field, and experience with or interest in field studies on individual salmonids. Stipend and full tuition waiver provided (UMass). To apply, send a letter of intent, copies of transcripts (can be unofficial) and GRE scores (UMass), names and contact information of three references to Dr. Ben Letcher at the Conte Lab address below.
