GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP AVAILABLE FOR RESEARCH ON WHITE SANDS PUPFISH

A graduate student assistantship is available beginning the fall semester,
2000 at North Dakota State University. The successful candidate will
conduct dissertation research on questions regarding the conservation
ecology of the White Sands pupfish.

Current work focuses on parasite-host interactions. Two populations of
White Sands pupfish (Cyprinodon tularosa) occur in relatively saline
habitats and consequently escape parasitism by digenetic trematodes. In
contrast the other two populations occur in relatively fresh habitats and
are heavily parasitized. Research will focus on the costs of parasitism by
digenetic trematodes and will examine if population history influences
parasite resistance. We will also investigate the response of fish to
exotic parasites. Research will include laboratory research and field work
in southern New Mexico.

The assistantship is scheduled for a Ph.D. candidate (Masters required),
however outstanding students may be considered for support in the Masters
program. The assistantship begins June, 2000, but the start date may be
negotiated for an outstanding candidate. The assistantship includes a full
tuition waiver.
