This request was sent to Fishfolk. I thought someone on Fish-Sci might be
better able to respond. Since he is not a member of the list, please
respond directly to Mr. Austermuhle at [log in to unmask] Thanks,

Dear Fishfolkers,

my name is Stefan Austerm|hle and I am the Director of Projects and
Scientific Research of the Peruvian NGO Mundo Azul. We are planing a
research on the abundance of octopus in the area of Playa Mendieta in the
Reserva Nacional de Paracas en Peru. The idea is to determine the species
living there and the size of their populations. In cooperation with the
local artisinal fishermen fishing for octopus and other molusc species we
want to develope a plan for a sustainable management of the
octopus-population in the bay. This project is a pilot-project in a process
recently started to solve the many problems wit uncontroled and ilegal
fishery in this protected area.

In Peru we have four species of octopus:
Octopus granulatus
Octopus fontanianus
Octopus mimus
Octopus saphenia

We are urgently looking for any helpful information or experience from
other countries on management of octopus-populations and -fisheries.
Because this is a first time a work like this will be done in Peru we are
lacking even in basic information on reproduction-rates and ecology of
these species. Sadly a lot of basic research is missing in Peru. Therefore
I would be thankful for any advice or literature or contact-adresses.

Thanks a lot
Stefan Austerm|hle
