The Columbia Fishery Resources Office (CFRO) of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife
Service is recruiting for a Student Temporary Experience Program (STEP)
position. The purpose of the STEP is to recruit high quality students for
temporary work in the Federal Service, to support a diverse workforce, to
provide exposure to public service, and to promote hands-on experience.

This GS-4 biological science technician (fisheries) pays $9.80/hour.

CFRO works primarily on the Lower Missouri River monitoring the endangered
pallid sturgeon and fish habitat use of the newly created Big Muddy
National Fish & Wildlife Refuge. CFRO also conducts annual fisheries
management surveys on federal lands in Missouri, Illinois, and Iowa.


Major Duties:

- Participates w/ Fishery Biologist in fisheries surveys

- Assists in field studies to determine relative abundance, growth, or
distribution of fish populations. Collects, weighs, & measures fish
captured in assessment gear and identifies, counts & records all specimens
captured.

- Collects basic data from field investigations of watershed and fishery
restoration projects

- Operates, repairs & maintains electro fishing gear, nets, water craft
with outboard motors, and other assessment gear used in river and lake
surveys.

- Assists with the preparation of draft reports involving simple tabulation
or collection of data w/ comments on surrounding environments & conditions
that could affect assessment activities.

Qualifications:

- must be a U.S. citizen

- must be enrolled as a student in good standing at a college or university
and attending school full or part time

- must have completed coursework in either Icthyology, Fish Ecology, Stream
Ecology, or similar course.

- must be willing to relocate for the summer to Columbia, Missouri

- must have knowledge of the basic procedures and technical terminology
used in the field of fish and wildlife biology

- must have experience, and/or education or ability to use standard
laboratory and field equipment and instruments.

- must have knowledge of scientific methods of measurement and skill in the
collection, consolidation, and summarization of data.

- must have the ability to safely operate and perform minor repairs on
instruments, specialized equipment, motor vehicles, and outboard boats.

Educational/Experience Expectations:

The selected candidate will learn to operate and maintain several forms of
fisheries collection gear including: hoop nets, gill nets, benthic trawls,
seines, and electro fishing. The STEP candidate will learn to identify
Midwest fishes and will gain experience on both rivers and lakes. The
candidate will also become familiar with the operations of the U.S. Fish &
Wildlife Service.
