Hi Paul,
We are going through the process of establishing procedures to deal with animal
ethics issues for MAFRI's fisheries research, so I'm interested in the answer to
your question too!

I would have thought (perhaps hopefully) that as larvae do not have well
developed nervous systems, they won't have pain receptors and that therefore
questions about "humane" killing are not relevant.

I suspect it's another example of mammal-based guidelines being innapropriately
applied to fish. (There aren't many broadcast spawning mammals around against
which these sorts of guidelines get tested.)

NSW has a draft document on animal ethics and fish - "A Guide to acceptable
Procedures and Practices for Fish and Fisheries Research". It's the most
comprehensive I've seen after canvassing all State agencies and CSIRO for their
approaches to the issues. I can't put my hands on my copy at the moment but I
don't think it makes any specific reference to larvae. Helena Heasman at Port
Stephens is the EO for their Animal Ethics committee
([log in to unmask]) if you want to check.

Cheers
Sandy
