European scientists are invited to conduct short-term research projects at 
the ‘Bergen Marine Food Chain Research Infrastructure' at the University of 
Bergen and the Institute of Marine Research in Bergen, Norway. Access to 
the Infrastructure is supported by the European Union through the 
‘Improving the Human Research Potential’ Programme. More than 100 
scientists from all over Europe have been hosted by Bergen Marine 
(previously ‘Large Scale Facility for Marine Pelagic Food Chain Research’) 
since 1996.

The programme offers a unique opportunity for conducting integrated 
research in a set of complementary installations covering the axis from 
controlled seawater laboratories through experimental ecosystems to natural 
environments. Guest teams can conduct their projects independently or in 
cooperation with local research groups in the following research areas: 
oceanographic processes, planktonic food chain dynamics, early life history 
of fish and shellfish, fish recruitment, fish physiology, aquaculture, fish 
diseases, molecular marine biology and environmental health.

Participants of the selected projects will be provided access to the 
Infrastructure free of charge for a maximum of three months, including 
logistical, technical and scientific support. International travel and 
subsistence expenses will also be covered. Only research teams currently 
conducting their research in the Member States of the European Union and 
Associated States are eligible for financial support through Bergen Marine.

Project proposals are accepted on a continuous basis and evaluated after 
three fixed annual deadlines (March 1, August 1 and November 1). Selection 
of project proposals is carried out on the basis of scientific merit 
through an independent peer review procedure. Application forms and
