National Research Council - Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR),
Institute of research on Marine Resources and Environment - Istituto di
ricerche sulle Risorse Marine e l'Ambiente (IRMA), Mazara del Vallo, Italy

IRMA's work covers principally the study, assessment and management of
demersal and pelagic fisheries resources. The work of its Marine Biology
Lab (MBL), located in Castellammare del Golfo, focuses on the study of
ecological processes in coastal ecosystems and on the management of coastal
environment and resources. Current interest is centred on the features and
effects of marine protected areas (MPAs).
Castellammare del Golfo is a small town located in NW Sicily within an
environmentally, artistically and historically highly relevant area.
Palermo, a large and attractive city, is about 60 km far.

A 20-month position is offered in the field of fishery science applied to
MPAs, within an EC-funded research program entitled "The Value of Exclusion
Zones as a Fisheries Management Tool: a strategic evaluation and the
development of an analytical framework for Europe" (VALFEZ).
The candidates must be EU citizens.
DUTIES: the successful applicant will assist the MBL scientific team within
the VALFEZ tasks. In particular he/she will have to review the relevant
literature, analyse fishery-based data, calculate population dynamics
parameters (e.g., growth, mortality rates, recruitment rate, etc.), manage
catch/effort data, assist in the completion of the reports to EC and
prepare a final report on his activity within IRMA.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS: Within-Europe travels for work meetings fully funded by
IRMA will be required. A contribution for lodging could be provided by
IRMA. The successful applicant will have to take out an insurance policy
covering possible accidents deriving from his work for IRMA and third party
liability. He/she MUST NOT attend PhD courses during the contract.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS: BSc (MSc preferred) in marine biology, marine
science or related disciplines. Documented skill and previous experience in
the population dynamics/fisheries science field. Ability to write precisely
and speak a good English. Skill in the creation of graphs/tabs with Excel
is necessary.
SALARY: the total gross remuneration is 50 million lire (25823 Euro).
Considering Italian taxes, the successful candidate will receive a net
monthly salary of 2,118,000 lire (1,094 Euro). He/she MUST NOT receive
other salaries or grants of similar nature neither by Italian nor by
foreign Institutions.
Renewal of the contract is possible, depending on performance and on the
availability of funds.

Candidates who have passed the pre-selection phase will be possibly invited

Notification to the successful applicant will be sent. The successful
applicant must confirm his/her acceptance within 5 days from the receipt of
the contract. The job will start on 1 June 2000.
