Ann, While I personally haven't used it, AD model builder seems to be a favorite tool of many of the folks dealing with complex fisheries models. These models can, and frequently do, include age structure information. The apparent advantage is in its ability to deal with multiparameter nonlinear optimization issues. At an Alaska SeaGrant symposium I attended on Fisheries Stock Assessment Models (see http://www.uaf.edu/seagrant/Pubs_Videos/pubs/AK-SG-98-01.html ) There were quite a few presentations given which made use of AD model builder.
Basically AD model builder is a higher level programing language for model construction, which then creates an underlying C++ code used to estimate the model parameters and report results. While you don't need to know C++, there is some programing and you certainly need to know model development. If you have a need or desire to deal with highly parameterized models - it apparently has an edge over other modeling platforms in its speed and ability to converge to a solution.
At one point I came across a listserv for AD model but I'm not sure if it was very active. You might check with the company itself, Otter Research (http://otter-rsch.com/) directly to find out more.
Best Regards,
Pete
