Second Announcement of the International Congress "Authenticity of species
in meat and seafood products " that will be held in Vigo (Spain) in
September 18-20th, 2000. Please, pass the announcement along to anyone
interested and post if possible.

Authenticity of fish and meat products has become a very important issue
related with fraudulent substitutions of species in commercial products.
The Congress will cover a wide range of aspects involved in food
authenticity, from non-scientific issues such as legislation, trading,
resources management, the need for authenticity testing, labelling
legislation of meat and seafood products, the interests of consumers and
industries in labelling and authenticity to the latest advances in methods
for species authentication, with two lecturers, and several oral
contributions. The Congress also includes the symposium "Food labelling for
transgenic organisms", that will address the problems related to the
production and detection of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in
foodstuffs. Finally, there will be an open workshop with speakers
responsible for EU-funded research projects on the subject of the congress.

The general programme for the meeting includes:

Moday 18th September
THE NEED FOR AUTHENTICITY TESTING. Invited lectures:
- Economic deception by species substitution in seafood and foodstuffs.
- The effect of overfishing on species substitution in seafood products.
- Safety issues related to species substitution.
- Ecological impact of illegal commerce of endangered species.

LABELLING LEGISLATION OF MEAT AND SEAFOOD PRODUCTS. Invited Lectures:
- General considerations about labelling legislation
- Labelling legislation in Canada
- Labelling legislation in European Union
- Labelling legislation in Japan and Asian Countries

THE INTEREST OF CONSUMERS AND INDUSTRY IN LABELLING AND AUTHENTICITY.
Invited lectures:
- The interests of the fishing industry in labelling and authenticity.
- The interests of the meat industry in labelling and authenticity.
- The interests of consumers in labelling and authenticity
- Traceability of fishery products.

Tuesday 19th September
ANALYTICAL ADVANCES IN THE IDENTIFICATION OF FISH AND MEAT SPECIES. Invited
lectures:
- Seafood products.
- Meat products.
- Oral contributions.

Wednesday 20th September 2000
FOOD LABELLING FOR TRANSGENIC ORGANISMS. Invited lectures:
- The science of transgenic animals for food production.
- Identification and control of transgenic fish and cattle.
- Risk of transgenic food production: Effect on consumers and environment.
- Oral contributions

EC PROJECTS ON FISH AND MEAT SPECIES IDENTIFICATION.

We encourage you to present oral and/or poster contributions. Abstracts
must be submitted by June 30th, 2000. The papers submitted will be eligible
to be published in a peer-reviewed book.
