Hi Howard,
In highly industrialized areas even higher concentrations are often found, in a
longtime study of PCB-contents mainly in eels but also other fish made by the
Fisheries Office of Berlin during the last 15 years they had found the highest
concentrations up to 2-3 mg/kg bodymass in eeels from the Berlin waters
(Congeners 28+52+101+138+153+180).
The PCB's originated often from old destroyed industry areas, were outwashed by
rainfalls and accumulated in the sediments, from there reactivated by benthon
organisms and consumed by the fish. The highest bioaccumulated values were found
in long-living predator fish with high lipid contents (direct regression of
lipid content in eels to PCB burdens).
The registered values led to a total restriction of fish trade or onsumption
from these waters for long years, instead of this the fishermen were paid for
catching fish which were then processed like chemical waste.
I dont know if there are any referred publications about this subject, I only
have some grey literature, but if you have further interests in facts the best
