Like most things we create, AUV's have their limitations relative to what
the needs are of the user(s). For example, ROV's offer rapid and flexible
maneuvering within the scope of the umbilical (available in various
lengths). I have begun using inspection class ROV's to conduct elasmobranch
surveys at the Flower Garden Banks, thus permitting me to maneuver about the
landscape locating and following sharks/rays and other pelagic and demersal
fishes as desired. However, ROV's are available on a "rental" basis though
inspection class ROV's are inexpensive to purchase relative to other
underwater vehicles. IN defense of the scientists seeking an ROV, they know
their needs best and it should be recognized that not every form of
underwater technology (i.e. submersibles, one-atmosphere suits, ROV's,
AUV's, etc.) will meet their needs.

To the list:
In today's world, why would any institution consider the PURCHASE of an ROV
when the technology for AUV's exist and is developing quite nicely at places
like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology? I wonder, also, if
institutions are looking at the work of Graham Hawkes and his building of "
Deep Flight " a new concept in submarine transport. Any tethered vehicle is
limited, why not support untethered technologies?
