VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Fisheries Research Specialist
Salary Range - $34,000 - 38,000 annually Closing Date: July 28, 2000

The Fisheries Research Specialist will coordinate all activities involving
social sciences and economics for the Commission, including the integration
of socio-economic information into the Commission's fishery management
program and development of data collection programs through the Atlantic
Coastal Cooperative Statistics Program (ACCSP). This position will also
assist in the coordination of other research activities in cooperation with
the Atlantic coastal states, federal fishery management agencies, and
universities. Annual priorities for research activities will be developed
in consultation with the Director of Research and Statistics.
The overall goal of the Commission's Research and Statistics Program is to
assist the Commission and its member states, in cooperation with relevant
federal fishery management agencies, to coordinate and improve Atlantic
Coast data collection and research activities for more effective state,
federal, and interjurisdictional fisheries management. In 1996 the
Commission initiated a program to more fully integrate social and economic
information into its fisheries management program. The Commission has also
provided full support to the development of the social and economic data
collection programs for the Atlantic Coastal Cooperative Statistics Program
(ACCSP).
Qualifications: Applicants must have a graduate degree in fisheries
science, marine biology, or a related field. Knowledge of social and
economic issues related to fisheries management, social/economic analyses,
fisheries research issues, interdisciplinary preparation for fisheries
management, proven writing and speaking skills, communication, coordination
and interpersonal skills should be demonstrated.

The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission was formed by the 15
Atlantic coastal states in 1942 for the promotion and protection of coastal
fishery resources. The Commission serves as a deliberative body of the
Atlantic coastal states, coordinating the conservation and management of
nearshore fishery resources, including marine, shell and anadromous
species. The fifteen member states of the Commission are: Maine, New
Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey,
Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina,
Georgia, and Florida.
