Hi members,
My name is Wouter van der Jagt, I'm a student Wildlife
Management in my traineeship at the University of
Leiden, The Netherlands (Dept. of Integrative Zoology,
Van Der Klaauw Laboratory).
Under supervision of Mr. Frans Witte(specialist in
Lake victoria cichlids).
There are several aquaria there with breeding lines of
species like: Haplochromis (y)pyrrhocephalus,
H.(Gaurochromis) iris, H. (G.)hiatus, Haplochromis
'argens'? and Rastrineobola argentea.(And many
others).
In some species we suspect a digestion problem. Some
of the fish show bulging genitals, which exceeds
possible bulging seen in breeding state. This gives us
some concern, since no eggs are coming. Our fishfood
consists of: shrimp with clams and normal dry
fish-flakes crushed carefully in a kitchenmachine. We
suspect a constipation in the digestion system caused
by the small peaces of shrip"shell". As always
University fundings are not the best. So my question
to you is: Does anyone have a suggestion for an
alternative, complete but cheap nutrition for
Haplochromine species? And does anyone have an idea of
any other possible cause for this genital bulging?
I hope someone can help us and thanks a lot for any
answers to our questions.
