Peter Hagen's comments on AD Model Muilder are essentially correct.
Specifically,
1. Yes it will work for age-structured models and several people have done
so. In fact it will work for almost any model. As Peter remarked, it is a
general-purpose framework for non-linear optimization.
2. It is not difficult to learn, but
3. You do need to know something about programming. You also need to know
something about statistics to interpret the result. It also doesn't hurt to
at least know what maximum likelihood estimation is.
The ADMB mailing list is maintained (I think) by Jim Ianelli
([log in to unmask]). Jim has also used it for age-structured models.
