Dear Fishfolk:
At IIFET 2000, a group of North American fisheries economists explored the idea of forming a group which would meet in the interim years between IIFET conferences, with the objectives laid out below. They have acted quickly to organize their first meeting. This group will have an affiliation with IIFET, details to be worked out as things develop. Please contact one of the committee members below, to express your interest or for further information.
Regards, Ann Shriver, IIFET
FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT FIRST NORTH AMERICAN FISHERIES ECONOMICS FORUM NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA APRIL 1-4, 2001
The first North American Fisheries Economics Forum will be held on April 1-4, 2001 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The goals of the Forum are to strengthen communication between North American fisheries economists in industry, government and academia, and to provide opportunities to discuss research results, research in process and future research needs and plans.
The Forum will include special sessions on a wide variety of topics related to fisheries economics and trade. Currently planned special sessions include the following:
* The Future of Aquaculture * Aquaculture Regulation and Policy Issues * Catfish Economics and Marketing * Seafood Trade and the Internet * Implications of Trade Liberalization for Fisheries * The Role of Economics in Canadian Fisheries Management * U.S. Fishery Management Councils and Economics: What is Needed and How to Get It? * Using Economic Incentives in Managing Bycatch
Abstracts are invited for papers for special sessions or on other topics related to fisheries economics and trade. The deadline for submitting abstracts is January 19, 2001. Suggestions for additional special sessions are invited, as well as volunteers to organize sessions.
Four informal "Introductions and Ongoing Activities" sessions will provide opportunities for industry, government, academic and student fisheries economists to introduce themselves and briefly discuss their areas of interest and ongoing activities.
An overview of Gulf Coast fisheries economic and management issues will be held on April 4, which will include visits to processing facilities and fishing vessels.
The Forum will serve as the inaugural meeting of the North American Association of Fisheries Economists. This Association will be affiliated with International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade (IIFET), an international organization of fisheries economists which meets in even-numbered years in different countries around the world. Future North American Fisheries Economics Forums will be held in odd-numbered years in different coastal areas of North America. (The most recent IIFET meeting was held in Corvallis, Oregon in July 2000, and the next meeting will be in Brisbane, Australia in July 2002.)
