International Conference on the Tropical Marine
Environment
“Charting the Millennium”
April 16th - 19th 2001
In
Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan,
Malaysia
Organised by
Malacca Straits Research and Development Centre
(MASDEC, UPM)
Faculty of Science and Environmental Studies (FSES,
UPM)
and
Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA)
In Collaboration with:
Department of Fisheries, Malaysia
Introduction and Objective
The tropical seas play an important role in the economy
of the surrounding countries. From time immemorial,
the marine environment has provided valuable resources
to these countries. The wide variation of
geomorphological features, together with climatic and
oceanographic conditions make tropical seas highly
productive, capable of supporting rich diversity of
marine flora and fauna. In fact, the world’s most
productive marine ecosystems such as coral reefs and
mangroves are exclusively found in tropical waters.
Fast expanding population in the surrounding countries,
however, place great demands on living and non-living
marine resources. Rapid economic development,
especially in the coastal zone poses continuous threats
to marine life. Currently, many countries are aware of
the environmental cost of marine pollution and habitat
degradation, and are beginning to focus attention on
sustainable development and management strategies to
curb growing environmental problems. However, lack of
integrated data-base and multidisciplinary research in
tropical seas has hampered the establishment of
appropriate measures and sound environmental policies.
Lack of concrete data on tropical ecosystem structures
and processes causes problems in convincing relevant
authorities for effective implementation of sustainable
environmental management plans.
In some countries, research on the tropical marine
environment is gaining momentum. This conference
intents to provide a platform for gathering, collating
and disseminating the existing information on tropical
marine environment and resources. Scientists,
academics, policy makers and stakeholders from the
environmental and private sector would have the
opportunity to deliberate, share and exchange their
findings and opinions which could contribute to the
formulation of appropriate marine environmental
research projects, management strategies and policies
suitable for the tropical waters in this millennium.
This conference aims to:
¨ provide a platform on which scientists and experts
from various tropical regions are able to group
together for common benefits
¨ enable dissemination of recent information and
technologies pertaining to research and other related
matters on the tropical marine environment
¨ provide a framework for the formulation of future
research, development and management strategies
regarding the tropical marine environment.
Who Should Attend
Scientists, professionals, managers, policy makers,
planners stake holders and users involved in the
management of tropical marine environment.
Papers are invited on a wide range of topics related to
the tropical marine environment. The areas that are
expected to be of interest include:
¨Tropical Oceanography
¨Marine Biodiversity and Ecology
¨Mariculture
¨Marine Resources and Ecotourism
¨Marine Pollution
¨Coastal Zone Management
¨Marine Technology and Instrumentation
Venue and Dates
The Conference will be held in the resort town of Port
Dickson, Negeri Sembilan from the 16th to 19th April
2001. This town is located south-west of the city of
Kuala Lumpur, just outside the newly gazetted,
Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) development area and
about half an hours drive from the Kuala Lumpur
International Airport (KLIA) in Sepang. Temperature
ranges from 26°C to 32°C with typical equatorial
climate throughout the year. Port Dickson has
stretches of beautiful sandy beaches and attracts large
numbers of tourists throughout the year.
Call for Abstract
Authors are requested to submit abstracts of their
papers to the Conference Secretariat by 31st December,

published and distributed to all registered
participants upon arrival at the Conference.
Guidelines for the preparation of abstracts will be
sent to those who respond to the first announcement and
will also be later available on the conference web
page.
Scientific Papers
Oral and poster presentations pertaining to tropical
marine environment studies are welcomed. The technical
committee will review all the abstracts submitted and
their acceptance would be formally notified.
Publications
Manuscripts will be screened by an editorial committee
and reviewed by a panel of scientists. Final
instructions for the preparation of manuscripts will be
sent to those who submit the abstracts. The organizers
will adopt the Pertanika Journal of Tropical
Agricultural Science format for all the papers
submitted. All refereed and accepted papers will be
published in a special edition of this journal. Full
papers should be submitted together with other
presentation materials during registration.
Official Language
The official language of the conference will be
English.
