seems to me that both the "publication duration" and the increased financial
pressure on journals could be minimized by increased use of e-mail. For
example, author's proofs could be sent as a PDF file to the author and
his/her comments back to the editor via e-mail.  Also, reprints could be
made available to authors as PDF files, thus eliminating printing and
posting costs. I have recently published in a journal where even the
reviewer's comments were sent electronically.  Needless to say that this has
cut down the time span enormously, in contrast to the journal I am
publishing with now, where everything is going through snail mail.  The
latter method, however, might not be an option if reviewers request
extensive changes. I would be interested to hear some of the editors'
comments on above.
