Announcement for General Biologist Position (Molecular Systematist or Population Geneticist)
The U.S. Geological Survey-Biological Resources Division is seeking applicants for the temporary (at least one year) position of General Biologist to assist the Principal Investigator in molecular systematics and population genetics research. Duties will include addressing molecular systematics questions in selected at-risk fish (Family Percidae) and freshwater bivalves (Family Unionidae). The successful applicant would also be expected to contribute to ongoing studies into the conservation genetics of Atl. salmon, Atl. sturgeon, brook trout, black bear, spotted salamander, wood frog, bog turtle, horseshoe crab, and several unionid species. Strong consideration will be given to applicants with a molecular systematics or theoretical population genetics background. DNA-based laboratory experience, particularly microsatellite marker development and/or DNA sequencing, would be advantageous. The position is to be located at the Leetown Science Center's Aquatic Ecology Laboratory, Kearneysville, WV.
The position requires a minimum of a M.S. degree from an accredited college or university with a research emphasis on phylogenetics and/or conservation genetics. This position will provide a productive environment for someone seeking post-doctoral experience. The salary, while somewhat negotiable, is about $35,000 and includes such benefits as two weeks paid vacation, 10 paid government holidays, multiple investment options (e.g., 401K), and health insurance.
