CALL FOR PAPERS
(Second Announcement)
Deep-sea Fisheries Symposium
12-14 September 2001
Havana, Cuba
Hosted by the Scientific Council of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries
Organization
The Scientific Council of NAFO is pleased to announce this Symposium to be
held in conjunction with the NAFO 23rd Annual Meeting in Havana, Cuba,
co-sponsored by NAFO, the International Council for the Exploration of the
Sea (ICES), and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research
Organization (CSIRO). The Symposium will be co-convened by J.A. Moore (NAFO
- USA), J.D.M. Gordon (ICES - UK), T. Koslow (CSIRO - Australia), and
organized by the NAFO Secretariat.
Deep-sea fishery resources are increasingly exploited in various places
around the world. A worldwide trend exists towards increasing exploitation
of deepwater fishery resources. This has raised a number of issues
concerning both the biology and management of these resources. The purpose
of this Symposium will be to discuss the available biological information
and the issues in the management of deepwater fisheries. The Symposium will
address deepwater resources around the world, those resources being ones
typically fished at depths greater than 300 meters. Topics include the
following:
·Age, growth and reproduction of target species
·Life histories and estimates of production
·Identification of stocks and environments
·Impacts of fisheries on the target populations
·Bycatch and impacts of fisheries on habitats
·Techniques and methods used in deepwater fisheries
·Deep-sea crustacean and cephalopod fisheries
·Policy and management of deep-sea resources, especially in international
waters
·Sustainability of deep-sea fisheries
Structure:
The Symposium will be convened for three days. Papers will be presented in
non-overlapping thematic sessions, and posters will be displayed throughout
the meeting. Oral presentations will be 30 minutes, including a question
period. On the last day, a session will be devoted to summarizing the major
themes and conclusions of the Symposium.
Written work shall be presented in English and the meeting will be
conducted in English.
Venue:
The Symposium will be held in Havana, Cuba. Information on venue, hotels
and other accommodation will be made available by March.
Participation:
The Symposium is open to scientists, managers, policy-makers and all those
with an interest in deep-sea fisheries. Those who may wish to attend the
Symposium or contribute papers or posters are invited to complete the
attached registration form and return it to one of the co-conveners of the
NAFO Secretariat. There is no Symposium fee.
Papers and Posters:
Papers are invited on any of the above listed topics. Papers will also be
considered in other subject areas related to deepwater fisheries. Posters
will also constitute an important part of the Symposium. Contributions of
posters are encouraged, and will be displayed daily throughout the
Symposium. Papers and posters will be selected and placed in appropriate
sessions on the basis of their relevance to the topics. Authors may submit
both posters and papers.
Authors will be sent instructions on the format to follow in preparing
their contributions upon receipt and acceptance of their abstracts.
Abstracts:
Abstracts of 250 words or less must be submitted for both posters and oral
presentations. Electronic submission of abstracts to one of the
co-conveners is acceptable and encouraged, provided all relevant contact
information is furnished. All abstracts will be collated according to
session and distributed to all participants.
A deadline of 1 March 2001 has been set for the provision of titles and
abstracts. Authors will be notified of selected contributions by 15 March
2001. All papers and posters (prepared in a manuscript format) must be
submitted to T. Amaratunga (NAFO Secretariat) by 5 September 2001.
Publication:
It is anticipated that the proceedings of this Symposium will be published
in the Journal of Northwest Atlantic Fishery Science. The appointed
Editors will review papers submitted to this volume for both content and
style. Papers will also be considered from those submitting poster
presentations. All authors will receive a complementary copy of the
proceedings.
