I forwarded the following message to several lists dealing with theoretical
biology, but I suspect that it may be of interest to some FISH-SCI
subscribers too. I think that this promises to be an interesting meeting,
and a chance to visit an exotic and fascinating part of the world.

I might point out that Novosibirsk is about 1500 km from Lake Baikal, the
world's largest lake (in volume, not area I believe). I'm planning to go
there myself after the workshop, and if there is interest I have friends in
Irkutsk who might be willing to organise a field trip to Baikal.

Institute of Cytology and Genetics will organize the First Workshop on
Information Technologies Application to problems of biodiversity and
dynamics of ecosystems in North Eurasia - WITA'2001, to be held on July
9-14, 2001, in the Novosibirsk scientific center (Akademgorodok),
Novosibirsk, Russia. WITA'2001 will duly process and analyze the results of
the previous First International Conference "Biodiversity and Dynamics of
Ecosystems in North Eurasia" (BDENE'2000) held in Novosibirsk on August
21-27, 2000.

This workshop is sponsored by the Siberian Department of the Russian Academy
of Sciences (SB RAS), the Fifth Framework Program of the European Community
(INCO-2) and the Ministry of industry, science and technologies of the
Russian Federation.

I ask you to participate in WITA'2001.

Would you be so kind also to inform me about your decision to participate in
this event and send the preliminary title of your talk.

I also greatly appreciate if you could inform your colleagues of our
workshop or send to me the E-mail addresses of researchers who may be
interesting in this event.

Please find the first call for attendance in the following material.

Sincerely,

Prof. Nikolay Kolchanov,
Institute of Cytology and Genetics,

First Workshop on Information Technologies Application to Problems of
Biodiversity and Dynamics of Ecosystems in North Eurasia (WITA'2001),
July 9-14, 2001, Novosibirsk, Russia

First call for attendance

Institute of Cytology and Genetics will organize the First Workshop on
Information Technologies Application to problems of biodiversity and
dynamics of ecosystems in North Eurasia - WITA'2001, to be held on July
9-14, 2001, in the Novosibirsk scientific center (Akademgorodok),
Novosibirsk, Russia.

This workshop is sponsored by the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of
Sciences (SB RAS), the Fifth Framework Program of the European Community
(INCO-2) and the Ministry of industry, science and technologies of the
Russian Federation.

WITA'2001 will duly process and analyze the results of the previous First
International Conference "Biodiversity and Dynamics of Ecosystems in North
Eurasia> (BDENE'2000) held in Novosibirsk on August 21-27, 2000. Thus, this
workshop will be the second event in the framework of the Program running by
SB RAS goaled to intensify the participation of Russian scientists in
International projects on biodiversity conservation.

This workshop will emphasize the one of the topics of the previous
conference, namely, "Information technologies and modeling" and will be
aimed at the consolidation of the scientific and technological potential in
this field of biodiversity research. One of the specific goals of the
conference is to promote the creation of Ecological Network (ECONET)
directed to provide the intensive exchange of the data on biodiversity and
dynamics of ecosystems via Internet.

The following topics are suggested for discussions:

- Emergence and maintenance of biodiversity: computer analysis, modeling and
theoretical approaches;

- Dynamics of ecosystems: computer analysis, modeling and theoretical
approaches

- Development of GIS, digital libraries, Internet-oriented information
systems, different kinds of knowledge and data bases (common, specific,
distributed, hierarchical, both factographic and documentary) containing
results of experiments on ecosystems of different levels of organization;

- Analytical tools, software and algorithms for computer analysis of these
data and modeling of dynamics of ecosystems

- Designing of common standards of collecting, maintaining and presenting
these data in information systems and databases, by this way creating global
informational resource with free access for users primarily for stakeholders
from Russia and European Community

- Complex studies, scientific prognoses and taking reasonable decisions of
management to rationally use natural resources based on the results of
computer analysis and modeling

WITA' 2001 will have the following sections:
1. Emergence of biodiversity and evolution: theoretical and computer models
2. Databases on plant and animal biodiversity
3. Human genome diversity: databases and modeling
4. Comparative and evolutionary genomics
5. Databases and GIS technologies on forest, soil, permafrost, lake, river
and marsh systems
6. Dynamics of ecosystems: Theoretical and computer modeling

The workshop involves formal research presentations (about 50), poster
session, computer demonstrations and round table discussions.

The working languages of the workshop will be both Russian and English. The
simultaneous translation of each presentation will be provided.

Abstracts will be put at the workshop www-site promptly after their
receiving by the Organizing Committee. Also the hard copy of Abstracts will
be published. Papers on presentations selected by the Organizing Committee
will be published in a hard-bound archival proceedings. Each paper will have
both Russian and English version.

Important dates
Abstract deadline: March 31, 2001.
The workshop program will be sent to participants till May 31, 2001.
Papers on selected oral presentation submissions due: May 31, 2001.
