Dear Fish-sci members,

How much do we really know about the marine nutrient cycle? I think that
it's broken, and unfortunately fishing is the activity that has caused the
problem. I'm not "anti-fishing," I'm just in search of the truth. To make a
long story short, one thing that fishing has done is caused a lateral
(shoreward) diversion of nutrients that were once constantly recycled
offshore. No mechanism exists to return those nutrients, or replacements,
back to the offshore so now offshore ecosystems are feeling increasingly
"starved." Have you ever wondered why the steadily rising trend in
atmospheric CO2 levelled off slightly around 1940? The answer is quite
amazing...it's because fishing was seriously cut back during the war. To
