Applications are invited for the position of Fisheries Biologist (Statistical Genetics) within the Fisheries and Aquaculture Institute, Agency for Food and Fibre Sciences, Queensland Department of Primary Industries. The position is full time until 30 June 2003. The salary range is $47,809 - $52,207 p.a.
Location: Molecular Fisheries Laboratory, Southern Fisheries Centre, Deception Bay, Queensland, Australia. The laboratory is 30mins north of Brisbane on the foreshore of Moreton Bay.
Duties: To work with Dr Jenny Ovenden and collaborators on an externally-funded Australian Fisheries Research and Development Corporation project "Development of a genetic method to estimate effective spawner numbers in tiger prawn fisheries". Broadly, the aim is to critically evaluate a variety of mathematical methods for the calculation of effective spawner numbers using empirical genetic data. If favourable, the project will lay the groundwork for the wider adoption of the technology in fisheries stock assessment.
Skills/Abilities: The prerequisites are a Degree in Science from a recognised institution, the demonstrated ability to apply, analyse and write-up theoretical and practical research projects in one or more of statistics, population genetics, fisheries science or mathematics and a high level of programming skill in Visual Basic, C or equivalent.
