Several species of Trachinidae are native to the Canary Islands, as is the rather more dangerous Uranoscopus or Star-gazer. (Uranoscopus scaber,L.) There may also be two or three of this latter family present as well as U.scaber though mostly in deeper waters.
So about five possible dangerous shallow water candidates.

  Hello,

  Pez Arana

This seems to be the common name for the fish known as the Greater Weever
  in English, Trachinus draco.

There is the first account I have come across of someone being stung by
  this fish at:

  http://cbr.nc.us.mensa.org/homepages/BMLSS/weever2.htm#Greater Weever
  (upload 5 July 2001).

The identification of this fish is confrmed, but what other stinging fish
are there from the Canary Islands, in shallow water ? because there is also
the report of a swimmer who died after being stung. It could very well by
the fish in the first report came from reasonably close inshore.

  Cheers

  Andy Horton.
