Development of a new online FIPIS...
Those of you who found the old FAO Fisheries Project Information System (FIPIS) a useful resource will be interested to know that all of the data contained in the old system (maintained by FAO up until 1995) plus more recent fisheries and aquatic project data, and much more, is now accessible online via a new Internet portal called oneFish... http://www.onefish.org
>>>> FISHERIES PROJECT INFORMATION NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE VIA ONEFISH <<<< Details of more than 6,000 fisheries and aquatic projects, together with a wide range of other relevant information, can now be accessed online via the new interactive Internet portal oneFish. oneFish is a free, open-access, participatory information system which is being developed by the Support unit for International Fisheries and Aquatic Research (SIFAR) in partnership with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on behalf of a number of major donor organizations.
oneFish combines the attributes of an online directory and database. The primary subject focus of oneFish is fisheries and aquatic research and development, and the core data in the system comprises more than 6,000 fisheries and aquatic project records. These are enhanced with links to institutional and thematic websites, project documents and other relevant material.
The project information derives from the Fisheries Project Information System (FIPIS) maintained by FAO up until 1995. This is currently being updated with post-1995 project records from Donors databases and websites. In addition to project related information, there are an increasing number of specialised collections gradually being added to oneFish, e.g. FAO Technical Papers and IIFET Conference Papers. Perhaps of particular interest to fishfolk will be the new and powerful electronic version of those classic Torry Advisory Notes that are now available online, fully indexed and cross-referenced. Access is also provided to c.43,000 references and abstracts from the former Torry Laboratory library database, and work is currently in hand to provide access to the full text of BOBP (Bay of Bengal Programme) Publications.
Individuals as well as institutes and organizations can upload information about their fisheries and aquatic projects and related publications and research output into oneFish. In the first instance you must register as a member. This is a simple process initiated by clicking on the Join Now graphic on the homepage. As a registered member you will have access to the oneFish "suggestion" forms, and "Explorer", your own personal space in oneFish where you can manage your uploaded information. "Topic Editors" have a higher level of access, enabling them to directly add information to their topic, suggest linking it to other topics, and manage information submitted to their topic by other members. Further information about becoming a topic editor can be found at: http://www.onefish.org/addtopic_help.htm
oneFish enables the collection, sharing and dissemination of information across a wide range of subjects relevant to those working in the fisheries and aquatic research and development sectors. Information can be uploaded in any format, and ownership of information is retained by the originator. You can post news items and details of forthcoming events, initiate polls on specific issues; and set up discussions around a specific piece of knowledge, or on a individual topic. The knowledge is organised in browseable topic trees, the management of which is carried out remotely by topic editors - subject specialists and enthusiasts in their respective field.
The first fully-interactive version of oneFish (1.0), went live on the Internet in February this year. Since then several mini upgrades have followed and in September/October this year the current system will be replaced by a re-engineered version on a new software platform, offering a significant number of enhancements to the functionality. Future planned developments include the incorporation of an advanced search; subject specialist thesauri; and satellite systems to house the project and bibliographic data which will provide extended capabilities for data manipulation, analysis and export/output options. These latter developments will be incorporated into the system at various stages during the coming 12/18 months.

Please be aware that the system is still under development, and so you may experience some system `bugs'. Please contact me if you experience any problems.
Many thanks
