CALL FOR PAPERS

As part of the fifth conference of the European Society for Oceanists
(ESfO) 4 - 6 July 2002 to be held in Vienna on the topic "RECOVERING THE
PAST: RESOURCES, REPRESENTATIONS, AND ETHICS OF RESEARCH IN OCEANIA," we
have scheduled under point 10 - Regional Perspectives - a regional
working session on Fiji, under the heading:

FIJI: RESOURCES FROM THE PAST - RELATIONS OF TODAY

This session provides a framework for discussions focusing on a concrete
theme; it also offers a forum for the exchange of information and
analyses concerning contemporary developments in Fiji.
The working session will, it is hoped, spark debate concerning the
extent to which in Fiji resources from the past are mobilized to shape
today's relations. This perspective will permit relationships between
persons and groups to be studied on the intracultural and interethnic
level as well as in the inner-Pacific and international context. Papers
might focus on social relations within the economic, religious,
political, and other cultural spheres, with special reference to gender,
class and/or ethnic group identities. To be debated here is the manner
in which, in ongoing processes of relationship formation, power
realities are also negotiated. Of particular relevance in this context,
on any reading, is the question of how relationships are shaped in terms
of representations of the self and the other. In the final analysis,
this question might also address the matter of research relations
between Pacific Islanders and anthropologists.
Apart from addressing the above topic, this regional session will permit
information to be exchanged on earlier, current, or upcoming research
work in Fiji; it will also serve as a forum for discussion of the
current events in Fiji.
Presentations at this working session will be restricted to around 15
minutes.
