I seek a Ph.D. or exceptional M.S. student to work on a project examining
factors affecting fish movement and recruitment in headwater fish
assemblages. Objectives are to determine effects of natural and
anthropogenic barriers to fish movement and recruitment at multiple spatial
scales and the resulting impact on fish assemblage structure. The student
will also develop a related research project to pursue their own interest
area. The project will involve substantial field work in the Ozark
Mountains on the Buffalo National River and its tributaries, including
sampling fish and habitat, marking fish with elastomer and PIT tags,
supervising technicians, analysis of data, and providing written reports.
Applicants should have a B.S. in fisheries, ecology, biology, or a related
field and; 3.0 GPA (minimum); 1000 (V+Q) minimum GRE. Previous stream
research experience and fish identification skills are preferred, but not
essential. Applicants must be responsible, motivated, and able to work
independently in remote field locations. Stipend will be $15,000 plus full
tuition waver. Start date would be summer or fall semester 2002. Contact
