1.  POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT - RESEARCH ASSOCIATE (postdoctoral) position

The Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO),
University of Washington, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration's Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) will have
available a research position starting in Spring/Summer, 2002.  The
appointment will be made through the School of Fisheries at the University
of Washington, Seattle, WA.

The position will involve development of a numerical simulation model
which will allow examination of the effect of varying prey abundance and
distribution on the endangered Alaska Steller sea lion and its foraging
behavior and bioenergetics. The post-doc needed for this project will be
responsible for a critical component of this model: the foraging
component, using recent and innovative methods from the fields of marine
mammology and fisheries, animal behavior and optimal foraging, using
high-level computing technology such as neural networks, genetic
algorithms or evolutionary programming. She/he will review recent
literature, develop one or several approaches to this problem, and program
it in C in such a way that it will integrate with the rest of the Steller
sea lion individual-based model.  The post-doc will be responsible for
parameter estimation, sensitivity analysis, model corroboration, and
design of model experiments to examine different hypotheses about foraging
and the effects of varying prey densities on sea lions.  The post-doc will
analyze results, and summarize them in the form of reports, refereed
journal publications and/or meeting presentations and seminars.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Fisheries, Quantitative Ecology or related
field, must have expertise in working with mathematical and numerical
simulation models, statistical methods & parameter estimation,
experimental design and data analysis.  Experience in C programming is
desirable, but not necessary.

Term of appointment:  Two (2) years.

The position is located at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center, Sand Point
Way, Seattle, Washington.

2. JOB ANNOUNCEMENT - RESEARCH ASSOCIATE (postdoctoral) position

The Joint Institute for the Study of the Atmosphere and Ocean (JISAO),
University of Washington, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration's Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC) will have
available a research position in Spring/Summer, 2002.  The appointment
will be made through the School of Fisheries at the University of
Washington, Seattle, WA.

The position will involve updating and expanding an existing
individual-based model (IBM) for the early life stages of walleye pollock
in the western Gulf of Alaska, along with a
Nutrient-Phytoplankton-Zooplankton (NPZ) model (designed to provide a
dynamic food source for young pollock), and use these in (1) model
experiments designed to examine recruitment processes in the western Gulf
of Alaska pollock stock, and (2) to run the coupled IBM-NPZ model with a
20 year time series of a physical model (SPEM)to look for patterns in
recruitment and underlying forcing.

Updates to model components will require literature review, parameter
estimation, and programming. She/he will design model experiments to
examine how physical and biological factors affect the recruitment of
young fish.  She/he will also run the models (IBM and NPZ) forced by the
time series of physical model runs.  The post-doc will be responsible for
analysis and summary of model experiments and time series runs, and for
presenting these analyses in written format (reports and refereed journal
publications) and as oral presentations at meetings and seminars.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Fisheries, Quantitative Ecology or related
field, must have expertise in working with mathematical and numerical
simulation models, C programming, experimental design and data analysis.
Experience in marine fish recruitment studies and knowledge of basic
oceanographic principles is desirable, but not necessary.

Term of appointment:  Two (2) years.

The position is located at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center, Sand Point
Way, Seattle, Washington.
