The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council is soliciting nominations
for its "GEM" Public Advisory Committee and three subcommittees (see
http://www.oilspill.state.ak.us).

The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council was formed to oversee
restoration of the injured ecosystem through the use of the $900
million civil settlement. The Council consists of three state and three
federal trustees.

The Gulf of Alaska Ecosystem Monitoring and Research (GEM) program, a
long-term commitment to gathering information about the physical and
biological components that make up a world-renowned marine ecosystem.

The Trustee Council will fund the GEM program beginning in October 2002
with funds allocated for long-term monitoring and research, estimated
to be approximately $120 million.  The Trustee Council will manage
these funds as an endowment, with the annual program funded by
investment earnings after inflation-proofing, thus providing for a
stable program through time.  The Trustee Council may choose to fund a
smaller program in the early years to allow the corpus of the fund to
build.  The Trustee Council’s long-term goal is to allow for additional
deposits and donations to the fund from other sources to increase the
corpus.

What makes GEM unique is that it incorporates interagency cooperation
and collaboration, public involvement and accessible, informative data
and information on the Gulf of Alaska ecosystem.
