I am working with WWF, the conservation organisation, and we have just launched a digital petition as part of our campaign to stop over fishing and the destruction of the marine environment by the European Union's fishing fleet. You can sign the petition at: http://panda.org/stopoverfishing/petition
The petition will be presented to European Union Fisheries Ministers when the meet in December to decide on the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy. The Policy has an impact well beyond European waters as the EU has signed access agreements with third countries in Africa, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific.
WWF is calling for a reformed Common Fisheries Policy that promotes a sustainable fishing sector with clear commitments to:
- Eliminate over-capacity in the EU
- Reform and reduce harmful subsidies
- Ensure fair and sustainable fisheries access agreements
- Protect the marine environment
