JOB ANNOUNCEMENT: SENIOR BIOLOGIST

Center for Fisheries Enhancement
Fisheries Habitat Ecology Program

Job Description: The successful candidate will fill a full-time senior
biologist position in Mote Marine Laboratory's Center for Fisheries
Enhancement, Fisheries Habitat Ecology Program, and will be part of a
scientific team conducting research of fishes and their habitats in
Charlotte Harbor. The position is located at the Charlotte Harbor Field
Station in Pineland, FL. Salary ranges $24,000- $30,000 depending on
education and years of experience. Position includes full benefits
package. Renewal subject to performance and grant funds availability.

Duties: The incumbent will be part of a research team conducting
habitat-based, comparative, and hypothesis driven research of estuarine
fishes, and ontogenetic changes in fish-habitat associations. Usual,
but not all inclusive, duties include:

- Operation, upkeep, and trailering of small boats with outboard motors

- Use of sienes from 20' to 600' in length, trawls, throwtraps,
castnets, traps, angling, snorkeling, hydrosonic tracking, and other
field sampling gear in open water, seagrass beds, oyster beds, mud
bottoms, and tidal creeks
- Identification of fishes captured during sampling in Charlotte Harbor
- Use and maintenance of water quality equipment
- Administration and supervision of technician-level personnel,
college-level interns, and volunteers
- Data entry, quality control and analyses
- Report writing

Qualifications: Successful completion of a Master's Degree with major
study in fish ecology, biological oceanography, zoology, marine biology,
or marine conservation with at least 6 semester hours in such subjects
as marine ecology, fisheries biology, ichthyology, fish physiology,
oceanography, chemistry, statistics, and mathematics. Must have proof
of employment eligibility, the ability to work in difficult conditions
present in southwest Florida, and be able to obtain a valid Florida
driver's license. Must be able to work well both individually and as
part of a group and be able to independently bring assigned tasks to
completion. Good computer, verbal and writing skills necessary.

Specialized Experience Required: Small boat operation, field sampling
with stated gears.
