Biotelemetry Techniques for Aquatic Systems

Course # FIS 2202

DATE: December 9 - 13, 2002

LOCATION: National Conservation Training Center (Shepherdstown, West
                 Virginia)

TUITION: $650

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this course is to enable participants to determine the
suitability of radio or ultrasonic biotelemetry as a research method, to
plan a biotelemetry study to address management or research questions, and
to use telemetry equipment correctly and efficiently. Topics include
telemetry uses, history, study design, telemetry methods, system components
(transmitters, batteries, receivers, hydrophones, antennas), theory for
electronic signal transmission in water (electric circuit and field theory,
radio propagation through water, interference), mechanical (acoustic)
signal propagation through water, receiver reception range, receiver
interference, and frequency authorizations. Classroom activities include
problems to determine radio and mechanical signal propagation distance and
battery life as well as group exercises to develop study designs. Field
and laboratory exercises are used to demonstrate principles of equipment
operation, system component compatibility, installation, testing, receiver
sensitivities, transmitter power capacity, and transmitter attachment
techniques.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course the participant will be able to:

< Define common terms used in telemetry (e.g., decibel, attenuation,
      band width, frequency, signal-to-noise ratio);

< Discuss practical applications of biotelemetry as a method of
      research, and list constraints of biotelemetry in addressing
      questions of aquatic resource management;

< Accurately describe major telemetry system components and their
      assembly together;

< Describe aspects of radio frequency management (as obtaining
      frequency authorizations)

< Use principles of circuit, power transfer, and wave propagation
      theory to determine reception ranges of telemetry equipment under
      various environmental conditions;

< Discuss impacts of the aquatic environment on signal transmission and
      reception;

< Correctly identify five common equipment compatibility problems;

< Estimate transmitter battery life;

< Make informed decisions on choosing a telemetry system;

< Correctly operate telemetry equipment;

< Discuss methods of fixing animal locations;

< Correctly perform transmitter attachment or implantation; and

< Given a specific resource management question, design a biotelemetry
      study composed of clear objectives, equipment types, methods of
      deployment, methods of data collection, etc.
