Dear list members
I am currently involved in setting up a management programme for a number of water bodies in southern Bangladesh. All the waterbodies are "dead" river arms (locally known as Khals), and are therefore relatively deep (up to 10 m); the area ranges from 10 - 40 ha. All the Khals are surrounded by embankments however most of them are provided with a sluice gate, and it is therefore possible for fish to enter the waterbody from the river during part of the year.
Because the area where we are working is situated so near the sea the difference in waterlevel between the dry and rainy season is relatively small (about 2 m).
The fishing pressure is incredibly high so part of our strategy involves the implementation of dry season sanctuaries, and my question to the list is:
What size should these sanctuaries have to be effective?
Sincerely John Valbo Jorgensen
