Dear Colleague:
I’m conducting a study to update the distribution of coral reef fishes of
the genus Hypoplectrus (Teleostei: Serranidae), commonly known
as “Hamlets”, from the western Atlantic after the work of Domeier (1994).
Therefore, I have collected papers (around 70) that included records of
hamlets from different locations in the region. In addition, I have been
searching information from museums (e.g., UMMZ, NMNH, ANSP, FLMNH; around
500 records) to complement the study (including the FishBase web page).
However, there are locations where the information is scarce or difficult
to obtain. Locations from which I have scarce or no information are the
following: Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, Belize, Haiti, Guatemala,
Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Barbados, and Venezuela.
Thus, I am sending this brief questionnaire to ichthyologists or somebody
else with the expertise in fish identification to determine the following:
1)How many species are in the location? (please, provide common and
scientific name).
2)How can you rank the species in abundance (from more to less, 1 to 10)?
3)How does H. nigricans have the pectoral fins? Well pigmented (black) or
pale (transparent)?
4)Have you sighted or collected the Tan Hamlet? (see Humann 2002 or 1994
for picture).
5)Do you have or know of publications on coral reef fish lists of the area
(including hamlets).
Thank you for your fine attention and consideration on this request. I will
keep you posted on the results of this study once completed. Please, send
the information to the e-mail or normal address provided at the bottom. (In
case you know somebody else knowing on hamlets from the locations wanted,
but not included in FISH-SCI LIST, please forward him/her this
questionnaire). Thank you.
Sincerely,
Alfonso Aguilar-Perera
