Opportunity for Master's Study in Fisheries Behavioral Ecology At
Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center
We are looking for a highly motivated student interested in pursuing a
masters degree project dealing with experimental habitat studies and the
behavioral ecology of juvenile flatfishes. This position will be funded
(stipend and
tuition) through a cooperative program managed by the OSU Coastal Oregon
Marine Experiment Station (http://oregonstate.edu/dept/comes/), the Fisheries
Behavioral Ecology Program of NOAA's Alaska Fisheries Science Center and
OSU's Department of Fisheries and Wildlife (http://fw.oregonstate.edu/). The
student will work directly with the Fisheries Behavioral Ecology Program, which
conducts both basic and applied research on commercially important fishes
in the
North Pacific. Consult
http://www.afsc.noaa.gov/race/behavioral/default_fbe.htm
for a description of current research topics and list of recent
publications. This
student will have shared access to over 20,000 ft2 of temperature
controlled flow-
through wetlab space, fish stocks and prey cultures, as well as dry labs,
computer
and video facilities. This project will likely have a large
laboratory/experimental
component, but also may involve field studies in Alaska and/or Oregon. It is
anticipated that the position will commence during the early summer of 2002,
prior to the beginning of the academic year. This will allow the student
to become
familiar with the lab, senior researchers and staff, and begin to identify and
conduct preliminary investigations on a research project that dovetails
with other
concurrent projects. The Fisheries Behavioral Ecology Program is located
at the
Hatfield Marine Science Center (http://www.hmsc.orst.edu/) in Newport Oregon
(http://www.newportnet.com/). Newport is a small (pop = 10,000) coastal
community located 60 miles from Oregon State University (http://osu.orst.edu/).
Interested students should contact me (Clifford Ryer) for a more
detailed
explanation of the position and application procedures. I will be away
from 10/3
through 10/14. So, although I plan to check email, do not expect a response to
inquiries until after 10/14.
