On the other hand, if the default reply was to the sender, many
correspondences that may be of value to the group at large, may not get to
the group.

Might I respectfully suggest that the root of these problems is the default
response to the entire list? People tend to hit "reply" without thinking,
and their message goes to the list instead of the poster. If the default
reply went to the poster (as is the case with other lists I subscribe to),
then these problems with attachments and personal messages would be much
less likely to arise.
