That is the case - If it can do duplex changes its not a phy converter.

        I was under the impression that media converters are _PHY_ converters and
        nothing else. Lately I've begun to wonder if that's always the case. If
        you can set duplex and stuff like that on the converter it looks like the
        converter is actually messing with the MAC as well. Can somebody enlighten
        me?
