In trying to identify the collector of some early music recordings, a
strong candidate is Gerald Camden Wheeler. From the little I know of him,
he was an English ethnographer, born in 1872, who went to Mono-Alu (Solomon
Islands) in about 1908 and at least initially did 9 months ethnological
research there. He traveled in the area at various times with Rivers,
Hocart, and Thurnwald.
Does anyone know more about him? Has there been any recent research in
Mono-Alu? Below is a bibliography of writings by Wheeler from various
sources. I've only been able to see the ones marked with asterisks. Do any
of you know if any more details of his travel can be found in any of these?
Are there other writings? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
