In connection with a case he is preparing, a lawyer has asked me about
the survival rates of groundfish discarded after being caught by a
commercial trawler. Over the years, I have come across several studies
of post-discard survival rates in specific species caught by particular
gears but it is not a topic that I have ever put any time into. Does
anyone know whether there is a substantial body of research documenting
these survival rates? Is there any sort of compendium of results,
bibliography of relevant studies or anything of the kind?
If any member of Fish-Sci has special knowledge of this topic and would
like to take over the role of providing advice to the lawyer in
question, I would be more than happy to pass the task to someone better
qualified than I am!
