These days almost any GPS will give you 3-5 meter accuracy, as long at SA
stays turned off. You can buy many good GPS units for $100-250, including
some that are waterproof to 1 meter and float. The inexpensive handheld GPS
units have a major advantage over many of the high end units in that the
built in antennas on handhelds can generally pick up a signal through a soft
top and sometimes even a hard top. The separate antenna on other units
usually has trouble shooting through a top, a major consideration on many
boats.

Dear Chris,
I just went through all this, picking out a system for telemetry and
habitat mapping of groupers and humphead wrasse in Micronesia.
If you have lots of money to spend, an integrated GPS/GIS receiver would
be the way to go. The Trimble GeoXT has submeter accuracy, runs ArcPad
in Windows CE, and integrates nicely with all ArcGIS products. You can
use it with Trimble's beacon-on-a-belt differential. The system costs
around US$6500 and is the one I finally chose. I haven't bought it yet,
though I did get the chance to try out a colleague's unit, and I was
impressed
There is also the Trimble Pathfinder Pro XS, which I believe has 27.5 cm
accuracy but is very expensive (US $11,000).
If you're looking for something cheaper, I've used some Garmin and
Magellan systems that cost around US$500-750 and do an OK job, but even
with a differential, you're not going to get submeter accuracy (more
like 3-5 meters, based on my experience).
I would suggest checking the manufacturer's web pages for something that
suits your needs, and going from there.
Hope this helps,
Mark Tupper
