Yesterday, 23rd June 2004, a network test was performed between JIVE and three "telescopes". Onsala and Torun participated using Mark5s and their direct network connections, whilst, in lieu of Medicina, GARR installed a suitable machine at their POP in Bologna. The test used IPERF so we measured memory to memory performance using test data and no disk access. Results are summarised below:
Source > destination: min - max; average (in Mb/s)
Onsala > JIVE: 40.4 - 134; 64.7
Torun > JIVE: 67.5 - 344; 156.3
Bologna > JIVE: 237 - 601 ; 499.3
JIVE > Onsala: 238 - 390; 332.7
JIVE > Torun: 174 - 207; 191.7
JIVE > Bologna: 109 - 111; 110.0
The above results are for TCP tests. UDP tests failed for reasons that we are yet to investigate. We also have to understand why the rates were so variable and why they fell so far short of the 1Gb/s that we expect.
Anyway, the high bandwidth connection to Torun *was* established, albeit at the last minute, thanks to hard work in Torun and behind the scenes activity at Dante and in Poznan. This is a very positive result. We can now begin to plan some three and four station eVLIB tests.
Thanks to everyone who took part.
Regards, Steve.
