I am interested if anyone has any novel suggestions on baits that may deter turtles and dolphins while still attracting sharks.
I am currently working on minimising bycatch in a shark meshing and drumline fishery in Australia and we have problems catching the occasional loggerhead turtle on our drumline hooks and in our nets. Dolphins are very rarely caught but they tend to remove the bait off hooks relatively easily thus rendering them highly ineffective. We have found that most dolphins will not remove shark flesh from hooks but they quickly strip most fish baits (we mainly use mullet, Mugil cephalus) from hooks if they are in the area when the lines are baited. We use acoustic pingers on nets which appear effective for some species, some of the time!! We have tried heaps of baits such as chickens and are currently playing around with artificial baits.
Any novel ideas on ways to deter turtles and dolphins would be much appreciated.
