You are receiving this announcement via the News list (a temporary list for the Internet Conference
on Biotechnology in Africa. Your name have been added because of your
interest in one of the 3 e-symposia of ICBB-Africa:
* E-symposium on Biological Nitrogen Fixation
* E-symposium on Economic aspects on the use of
Biotechnologies and Bioengineering in Urban Agriculture
  by African Households
* E-Symposium on Phytoremediation and Water Purification

Below is the announcement for the Urban Agriculture by African

(pls copy to your friends)

E-Symposium on
"Economic aspects on the use of Biotechnologies and Bioengineering in
Urban Agriculture by African Households"

Date: 01-30 June 2005

The E-symposium focuses at how African households use biotechnology and
bioengineering methods in urban agriculture to increase income
generation and to ensure their food security.

The objectives are :
* to present proven methods that are used by African households
* to discuss how these methods can be more widely used and
what are the technical and socio-economic constraints
     for African households
* to discuss issues related to urban agriculture and their
     economic impacts on African households
* to discuss how African households can learn from other
     practices abroad

The e-symposium is organised so that you can interact with authors of 7
papers and discuss their papers which cover technological, economic and
public policy aspects of urban agriculture in Africa. A second parallel
activity of the E-symposium will focus on the end-users and will discuss
3 selected and important concerns :

1) What are the proven biotechnological and bioengineering
methods used in urban agriculture and how can they be
more widely used by African households
2) What are the technical and socio-economic constraints
and what can be done about them
3) How can information be delivered to end-users so that
they can increase potential for more income generation.
