Hi all
Dear Dr. Saad
Please read below about the rebirth of the Marine Science Centre scientific journal, Basrah University, Basrah, Iraq.
Regards
Laith A.Jawad
Announcing the rebirth of the journal of the Marine
Science Centre, Basrah University, Basrah, Iraq
Marina Mesopotamica
Also known by its Arabic name,
... Çæ . Ç í .. Ç ..... .... Ç .....
Majelat Wadi al-Rafedian li A'loum al-Behar
(Journal of Mesopotamia for the Marine Sciences)
as an online journal
http://www.public.iastate.edu/~mariposa/
MarinaMesopotamica/mmhome.htm
History and Prospects. Volume 1 was first published in 1982 as the Iraqi Journal of Marine Science. The journal then
ceased publication until 1987, when it was given the more distinctive name of Marina Mesopotamica. Volumes 2 through
17 were published twice annually until 2002, when publication ceased due to the unfavorable economic and political
situation in Iraq.
Now that Iraq is rejoining the world community, we have a unique opportunity to revive Marina Mesopotamica. We will
move the journal forward by publishing new articles on various aspects of marine and wetland science, including efforts to
restore the Mesopotamian marshlands and improve the quality of the marine environment of the Gulf region. Several new
articles have already been received and are being reviewed, and we hope to release the first new articles online in the
near future.
The new Marina Mesopotamica is a cooperative project between the Iowa State University Iraq Initiative Group (Ames,
Iowa, USA) and the Marine Science Centre, Basrah University (Iraq). This project is part of a more extensive effort of
project partners at several institutions to restore and further develop the quality of environmental science in Iraq.
Request for Previously Published Articles: We are seeking eventually to put all the previous issues of Marina
Mesopotamica on line. If you can contribute past issues, reprints, or even photocopies of past articles, these will be most
welcome and appreciated. Please contact Royce Bitzer, Hamid Ahmed, or Laith Jawad for details.
Call for New Papers: We are seeking interesting and informative scientific articles on a wide variety of topics, including
marine and wetland studies, ecology, ecocultural restoration, cultural anthropology, environmental education, research
on indigenous organisms, geology, and many others relevant to a fuller understanding of nature in the Middle East.
Future plans include an eventual print version of Marina Mesopotamica, as well as a companion online environmental
magazine, Middle East Environment, for editorials, popular articles, and a discussion forum about crucial environmental
issues in Iraq and the Middle East. More than simply being a scientific journal, we will also strive to be an important voice
for restoring the beauty and function of the natural world of Iraq.
Sustaining Contributions are also most welcome, and will assist us greatly in our efforts to develop Marina Mesopotamica
into a high-quality, reputable scientific journal with articles in both English and Arabic. Please contact us for additional
information on how you can support this worthy effort.
