Dear Dr. Harrod,

I am in the middle of my PhD and have been looking at morphology in
sticklebacks. My fish were anaethetised (they were being weighed and
measured at the same time) and then laid out on sheet of acetate graph
paper (the stuff with tiny squares) so that I had both a transverse and
longitudinal scale. I used a fairly cheap digital camera which I fixed the
aperture & shutter speed on. It was fixed on a tripod above the specimen.
Illumination was from 2 desk lamps angled at 45 degrees on to the fish. Are
you doing colouration analysis too ? This makes the light levels more
important and you have to remember to put in a colour standard. I have
found ImageJ software (free off the net) is quite good for morphometrics,
as is TPSDig.
