Do you know a good, self-motivated and organised student who is interested in taking a PhD?
How does parental contribution affect offspring performance in a brown trout/sea trout population?
Project Description: Theoretically, animals should follow the life-history strategy that results in the greatest fitness (defined as the strategy that leaves the greatest number of descendants). However, in most rivers brown trout, and other salmonid fish, display considerable phenotypic plasticity and variability in life-history characters ranging from forms that spend their whole life in one small stream (brown trout) to those that migrate to the sea (sea trout) and spend a variable amount of time away from their home streams before returning to spawn there.
Objectives and hypotheses of the PhD
* To determine the contribution of each parent and parental type to future generations, testing the separate hypotheses for males and females that reproductive success is linearly related to body size.
* To determine the effect of male and female parentage on offspring body size, growth, survival, behaviour and life history strategies to test a number of hypotheses on measurable fitness benefits of each life-history strategies.
The attachment contains a, a background and outline of the PhD, which has also been advertised through www.findaphd.com. The project supervisor wil be Dr A Ibbotson, based at CEH Dorset with University Supervisor: Dr J.R. Stevens from the University of Exeter, Dept of Biological Sciences.
The Application deadline is 18th March 2005, and should be by means of a CV and covering letter to Dr. Ibbotson.
